Name: Gruta do Natal

AKA: Christmas Cave

Website: http://www.osmontanheiros.com

Location: Terra Brava, Inland, Near Lagoa Negra

Directions: From the Via Rapida heading towards Angra from the base, it is easy to find if you follow the signs for Algar Do Carvao and get off at the exit, which is labeled, go past Algar, past Furnas do Enxofre, past the bulls (Cabrito), veer right and head to Lagoa Negra

Hours: Varies depending on the time of the year, Schedule above

English Speaking Staff: Yes

Tickets: 4 euro; Can be purchased inside, single tickets or may purchase a ticket to see this cave and Algar do Carvao (6.50 euro ticket)

To enter this cave you will be provided with a hard hat.  At times the ceiling is low, but if you crouch down, it is not a porblem.  The path is short, but there are additional hall ways for the more adventurous.  The main attraction is the alter.  When this cave first opened to the public, it was Christmas Eve and there was a mass held here.  You may either exit the way you came, or continue through more of the cave in a loop.  It is at this point, if continuing around, that you will really need to crouch down.  You can see various lava formations in these smaller tunnels.

Make sure to wear appropriate shoes.
