Modelo

Name: Modelo

Location: Praia da Vitoria, Angra do Heroismo

Website: www.modelo.pt

Hours: Open everyday of the week, closes 10 pm

Cuisine: Varied, General, Grocery Store

English Speaking Staff: Some do speak English

General Information: Both stores are complete grocery stores with bakery, meat, fish, and produce, along with typical perishable and non-perishable items.  While food labels are in Portuguese, knowing some basic food words will help understand the basic nutrition information or potential food allergies.  The buildings are more like small shopping malls, as you will find an electronics and clothing store there too, along with a cafe.  ATMs available.  Great selection of wines at good prices.  You can sign up for a Modelo discount card and coupons will be sent to you in the mail after you have used the card a few times.  It nice to have options that include local food products or Portuguese products in general.  There are some good choices out there if you look.

Modelo Praia: This is the smaller location.  Contains office supplies, kitchen wares, pet supplies, and other house wares in limited quantities in addition to foods.

Modelo Angra:  This is the larger location and contains a much bigger selection of food and items for the house, such as kitchen utensils, pots, pans, sheets and towels.  This is probably the closest thing to a Walmart to be found here.  There is a larger section of health foods, including gluten free and vegetarian options.  The cheese section is fantastic and the prices are reasonable.

Now called Continente Modelo. Not a huge change, and if you had been their previously the name Continente will seem very familiar to you. Uniforms and signs are changed, but the old Modelo savings cards still work.

More info on savings card: appears that when you save money on items you do not instantly save, but instead the savings are stored on your card. This money collects and you can apply it to a future purchase. Unsure if you can use it right away on the current purchase. Easiest to cash in when cashier speaks English. You can find information on your saved money at the bottom of your receipt if you have used the card for that transaction.

Oh my – they opened the Modelo when we were at Lajes in 1996 – it was a huge deal!
