As Nossas Ilhas

August 18, 2010

Name: As Nossas Ilhas

Location: Angra do Heroismo

Directions: When you drive into Angra, past the firs station, and head down the hill to the main square, make a right just past the hotel on the corner and head back up a hill.  At the top of the hill there is a stop sign.  Continue straight after stopping and on that next block you will find the restaurant on the left.  If you know where the Angra market is located, this is inside.

Telephone Number: 295 216 087

Website: http://www.asnossasilhas.com

Hours: Lunch noon-3; Dinner opens at 6:00

Cuisine: Traditional Portuguese, fresh ingredients as the Angra market is just nextdoor

Brought to the table: Bread, Cheese and pimento, Butter, Olives

English Speaking Staff: Some

This restaurant boasts a 2010 award for food.  While the outside may look less than wonderful, when you enter the door, you will be pleasantly surprised.  You can’t get much more traditional than this.  The food is good, but be patient as the staff may not all speak English.  If you try a little with their language, they will try a little with yours.  Since they offer traditional foods, if you understand a little Portuguese (the foods especially), you should have little trouble navigating the menu.  If you are looking for very fresh, very traditional food, this is the place to go.

Thank you for your comment. I am glad you like my blog. You have a beautiful island with much to offer and I am happy to share this with other Americans here. You’re English is great, so no worries. Much better than my Portuguese, but I do try to at least speak it, writing seems more difficult.

Glad you like the island, it´s small but beautiful 🙂

You should also try these restaurants:

    – “Beira Mar”, near the sea in S. Mateus Village.

    – “Ambientes & Sabores” in Rua Direita (Angra centre), problably one of the best in Terceira, but a little expensive…

    – “Porto de Pipas Restaurant” in Porto de Pipas, near Angra Marina. (not the one in the marina…AquaEmotion)

    – “La Traviata” near the airport (Lajes), good, cheap food.

These are some of my favourites

Thanks for the recommendations. We have tried all of those except Porto da Pipas, but it is on our list. I am glad to hear you like it because we plan to go there soon. The others I do have pictures on and hope to get up soon. Thanks for taking the time to share with me some of your favorite spots to eat on the island.

“Porto de Pipas restaurant” has a lower snack-bar area and a upper restaurant area. In the snack bar area I think you should try the “Francesinha” with french fries. This is not local food, it´s typical from mainland Oporto city, north Portugal and it´s very tasty… don´t know if you have already tried it, but it looks like this:

        and I love it… 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion and the picture. I was not familiar with this. We will definitely need to check this out. I did not realize they had a restaurant and a snack bar. I hope to get there in the next few weeks and try out their food.
