Activity: Swimming, Various Sports, Sun bathing

Where: There is a large beach area in Praia da Vitoria, and then a smaller beach area in Angra

When: Summer time, complete with life guards most times.  Open in off season, no life guards available.  People may still be laying on the beach or going for a swim up until October.

Praia da Vitoria:

The beach in Praia can get very busy in the afternoon hours when school is still in session, or stay busy all summer long.  The beach streches a good distance for the size of the city, with multiple sections and various access points.  Showers and bathrooms available.  Often times volley ball nets or soccer goals are set up.  There is also a small play ground for children.  The water is can be cold, even in the summer, but not unbearable.  Just get it, it only takes a minute to get used to the temperature.  Because the area is sheltered, there are not a lot of waves, unless the winds are high that day.  Often, it is like swimming in a lake.  Bring a few euros for ice cream when you are finished swimming.  The cafes in praia (which all carry ice cream) are just a few steps away.

This beach area is much smaller and more secluded.  The water is very calm here too because the beach area is protected from the open ocean.  This is a benefit to the location because in the summer time you can find docked rafts and floating trampolines out in the ocean, a decent swim away from the shore line.  You may even find a water aerobics class going on.  Showers and bathrooms available.  Food nearby.  In th summer come early because this beach can get packed with people and finding a spot may be difficult.

I can’t believe how packed that beach is! It reminds me a bit of the beaches in Nice…they were just as full of people! I was amazed.
