July 17, 2012

What: Festas da Praia 2012

AKA: Praia Fest

Location: Praia marina, downtown praia

When: August 3-August 11

For more information: http://www.festasdapraia.com/index.php  (English language website available, full schedule of events on website)

This is a major food and music festival.  Vendors from mainland Portugal set up restaurants along the water and provide full service dining.  Other activities include music performances, with this year including October Flight, Puddle of Mudd, Shaggy and others.  Bullfights will take place nearby and traditional crafts will be for sale.  This is a good time to pick up some local goods from the Azores.  In the past, military members and their families were able to park in the base beach area in Praia.  Make sure to check it out, you won’t regret it!

Hi there. Will be passing through Lajes here soon and was wondering what the must-see things are for a person with only a day or two. Thanks!

Thanks for your comment. If you only have one or 2 days, I recommend taking a drive around the whole island, if the weather is nice. I usually start from the base and head right to go around the island starting around to the north west and following through Lajes to Agualva, Biscoitos and then just keep going all the way around. You get to see some amazing views and get an overview of much of the island. You miss the middle, so if there is time, you can check that out too. Most of that is good to see in the summer when you can actually go into the caves. I also recommend spending some time walking around in Angra, going up and down all of the little side streets and looking in all of the stores. If it is a Sunday, there is not a whole lot to do as most everything is closed, but if the weather is nice you can still enjoy a walk outside. There are a lot of good traditional restaurants on the island, so make sure to enjoy some good meals. Stick with fish, squid, and if you are a meat fan, give the Alcatra a try.
